“Clay Courts”
Yana Boyko’s piece is a hand-made illustration showing a clay court from a bird’s eye view. The composition is built from two layers: the dynamic orange of the clay, and expressive, colourful dots that stand for the fans surrounding the court.Seen from above, the individual spectators dissolve into pure colour and rhythm. Step back and the dots read as a packed, roaring crowd; move closer and they become an abstract field of marks, energy without faces.Looking at the print, we are taken straight to Roland Garros, the great expanse of orange clay that has staged some of the sport’s most dramatic moments, here given a fresh, abstract interpretation.
